MADISON –Today Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) released the following statement regarding yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling in Wisconsin Legislature v. Palm:

“In the face of unprecedented challenges, Wisconsinites have stepped up and made necessary sacrifices to fight the spread of COVID-19. While we have seen progress in slowing down the virus, we cannot afford to let our guard down now.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court’s ruling nullifies the extended Safer at Home order, putting in jeopardy all of the progress we have made and leaving our state vulnerable to new and preventable outbreaks. Despite the reckless actions of the Court, we still have the collective power to overcome this pandemic by staying home when possible, continuing social distancing, being vigilant about hand washing and sanitation, and eliminating unnecessary travel.

With no clear statewide guidance, we are left with a patchwork of county and municipal orders, which may provide some protection but are not enough to prevent the spread of COVID-19 statewide. I know that Wisconsinites are making great personal sacrifices, and the economic impact of this disease has been devastating. While we all wish life could simply go back to normal, our communities and our economy will not fully recover as long as the spread of this disease remains a significant public health threat.

At a time when the Legislature could have been working with Governor Evers to slow the spread of COVID-19, the Republican leadership has spent their time fighting the administration in court. The people of Wisconsin deserve real common sense solutions, not partisan power games.

We are all in this fight together, and it is now more important than ever that we set partisanship aside so we can stay the course and overcome the very real public health and safety threat posed by this pandemic. Wisconsin’s health and economic well-being depend on it.”
