MADISON– Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) released the following statement announcing an endorsement from John Matthews for her candidacy for Wisconsin’s 16th Senate District:

“Today I am proud to announce an endorsement from John Matthews,” said Sargent. “John’s leadership in Madison’s education system has been something I’ve always admired. Our public schools would not be as outstanding as they are without John’s many years of leadership.”

John Matthews is the Executive Director Emeritus, having retired in 2016, of Madison Teachers, Inc. (MTI), which represents over 5,500 teachers, secretaries, and educational assistants. In addition to leading MTI for over 40 years, Matthews has been a fierce advocate against Governor Walker’s Act 10 and fighting for the rights of teachers and all public employees. In 1968, Matthews was hired as the executive director of the Madison teachers union. Matthews remains actively fighting for justice in education.

“Endorsing Melissa’s candidacy for the Wisconsin Senate was an easy decision. I have worked closely with her since she was first elected to the State Assembly, and have witnessed her strong, well thought-out advocacy,” said Matthews. “She has been a great advocate for the people of her District, for working people and for education.”

“I am incredibly honored to be receiving John’s support,” said Sargent. “To have a role model formally endorse my campaign is a remarkable privilege.”
