MADISON – Earlier today, Senate Democratic Leader Janet Bewley (D-Mason) and Assembly Democratic Leader Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) sent a letter to the Trump Administration requesting an extension of federal funds to support the work of the Wisconsin National Guard in the state’s COVID-19 response.

“The dedicated and highly-skilled members of the Wisconsin National Guard are working hard every day to save lives and help our communities battle this virus,” said Bewley. “We depend on our National Guard members for countless critical services, and with the crisis continuing to worsen, this funding is imperative. It is my hope that the Trump Administration will grant the funding quickly.”

“The services the National Guard are providing in Wisconsin are key components in our efforts to the slow the spread of COVID-19. Testing and contact tracing are tried and true elements in any public health effort,” Rep. Hintz stated. “The field testing sites help provide one of the few tools we have in identifying and isolating infected individuals quickly. If we lose this funding, and therefore the services the Guard is providing, we would be lose our ability to understand the full scale of the pandemic in Wisconsin. I am hopeful the federal government will step up and agree to extend this life saving funding.”
