(MADISON)—Today, Senator Tim Carpenter issued the following statement regarding the state legislature’s lack of action in the face of an ongoing COVID-19 crisis in Wisconsin:

“Given the complete failure of the Republican-controlled State Senate to convene in session to pass important legislation to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, it is time for Senator Fitzgerald to resign as the Republican Majority Leader.

“Wisconsin is in a full blown public health crisis, with our state currently ranking in the top three worst states for COVID-19. We are facing the worst public health crisis since 1918 and the Legislature has no scheduled meetings. It’s only going to get worse.

“Wisconsin is at a tipping point where more deaths, more people testing positive and more hospitals reaching their capacity could overwhelm the state’s health care delivery systems.

“The Republican-controlled Legislature has done nothing for over 170 days, failing to convene to pass any legislation to combat COVID-19 or the ongoing unemployment crisis. The GOP legislature would rather litigate using taxpayer dollars on private attorneys than to do their job and legislate. It is time for the legislature to convene in committees and session to debate and pass COVID-19 legislation.

“Senator Fitzgerald admitted that the Republicans don’t have a COVID-19 plan, even while they constantly criticize Governor Evers’ public health plans.

“Scott Fitzgerald should step down as Majority Leader of the State Senate, he has put politics over the lives and livelihoods of the people of Wisconsin.”
