Madison, WI – On Thursday, the State Supreme Court upheld several sections of state law allowing the State Legislature to oversee the activity of the Attorney General and state agencies. Senator Duey Stroebel (R-Cedarburg) issued the following statement:
“The Supreme Court has correctly sided with the State Legislature by allowing us to approve settlements reached by the Attorney General and to review the policies set by unelected bureaucrats. The Legislature’s direct accountability to Wisconsin’s citizens makes us uniquely positioned to protect their interests and this ruling recognizes that crucial relationship. These changes became state law because the people’s elected representatives in the State Assembly and State Senate passed them and an elected Governor signed them into law. Now the State Supreme Court has affirmed that these changes are the law of Wisconsin.”
“The changes to the administrative rulemaking process the court upheld are just the latest in a long line of reforms that have improved Wisconsin’s regulatory environment by reigning in overzealous bureaucrats, increasing opportunities for public input, and expediting the process for repealing out-of-date rules. I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure elected officials in the State Legislature set our state’s policies rather than unelected bureaucrats.”
“Once again the courts were compelled to affirm the ability of the State Legislature to pass laws. While liberal special interest groups may have unlimited funds to challenge properly enacted laws, the taxpayers of Wisconsin should be tired of using their hard earned money defending these laws. Our court system should be a tool for resolving legitimate disputes, rather than a venue for virtue signaling and pouting by parties who have failed to advance their ideas at the ballot box or in the halls of our State Capitol.”
