“Few legislators want Lincoln Hills closed more than me.
“The Type 1 sites proposed by Governor Evers are simply unacceptable, and I have
communicated that to Corrections Secretary Kevin Carr and Governor Evers.
Of the two Type 1 sites selected by the Evers Administration, one was not even considered by
the Juvenile Corrections Study Committee, and the other is a wetland that is frequently flooded.
In addition, the Evers’ Administration has not complied with the 2019 Act 8 requirements for
siting Type I facilities. Act 8 requires the Department of Corrections to hold public listening
sessions and meetings with the governing body of local municipalities. Act 8 also contains a
“safety valve” allowing the Department of Corrections to transfer Lincoln Hills inmates to other
appropriate facilities.
I remain committed to closing Lincoln Hills, and stand ready to continue my work with the
Juvenile Corrections Study Committee to appropriately locate the Type 1 facilities.”
