GREEN BAY, WI — Today, former Representative to the 90th Assembly District Eric Genrich and State Senator Dave Hansen (D-Green Bay) announced their endorsement of Kristina Shelton for Assembly District 90 in the August primary against incumbent Staush Gruszynski.
“Representation matters,” said Genrich. “Based on her experience, knowledge, and values, I know Kristina will be able to represent us well in the state Assembly. She has been dedicated to lifting up new voices and diverse perspectives through her service on the school board, and I’m confident she will continue that work very successfully as our next State Representative.”
Sen. Hansen added, “Today I am endorsing Kristina Shelton for the State Assembly for the 90th District. Kristina has a long track record of dedication to our community, our families, and our future. Kristina’s passion for community building, protecting the environment, and making sure our children go to the best public schools is only surpassed by her commitment to make our community and state a better place to live, learn, work and raise a family.
“Now more than ever voters in the 90th District need and deserve to be represented by someone who will be able to fully participate in the legislative process and be free of distraction.
While I typically do not endorse in party primaries, I believe with so much at stake we need someone of Kristina’s character, intellect, and experience now more than ever. I am proud to support Kristina Shelton for State Assembly.”
These endorsements are a major show of support for Shelton’s candidacy from the two most important Democrats in Green Bay. Genrich, who was elected mayor of Green Bay by an overwhelming margin in April 2019, previously served as the Democratic Assembly 90 representative from 2013-2019. Sen. Hansen has served as state senator for the area including AD90 since 2001.
“Words cannot express how tremendously honored I am to have the support of Mayor Genrich and Sen. Hansen,” said Shelton. “In their own way, they have both fought hard for the working people of Green Bay, and knowing I have them behind me shows the community that I am the one clear choice for Democrats on August 11.”
In December 2019, Rep. Staush Gruszynski was asked to resign by leadership in the Capitol and Democratic Party of Wisconsin after sexually harassing a Capitol staff member. He has since been barred from serving on committees and was removed from the Democratic Assembly Caucus, a decision reaffirmed last week by the Democratic Assembly leaders Gordon Hintz, Diane Hesselbein, and Mark Spreitzer. On July 9th, Assembly Democratic leaders Gordon Hintz, Dianne Hesselbein, and Mark Spreitzer announced their endorsement of Kristina Shelton for the 90th Assembly District.
Kristina Shelton lives in Green Bay with her husband and two children. She has an extensive career in teaching, public health, and nonprofit management. Her candidacy has been endorsed by many progressive organizations including Citizen Action of Wisconsin, AFT-WI, SEIU, Planned Parenthood, and Wisconsin Conservation Voters.
