Walt Stewart, a long-time district resident and Madison attorney, has announced his
candidacy as a Democrat for Wisconsin’s 48th  Assembly District.

“Wisconsin needs to focus on those issues which directly affect our lives and economy.
We need affordable health care, better schools, clean water, and easier access to post-high school education,” said Stewart.

Stewart has been in private law practice since 1984 assisting individuals, families, small
businesses, and non-profit organizations. He has served on numerous non-profit boards to
promote job creation and to provide programs and services for children, the homeless, mentally ill, and elderly. Boards include the North/East Senior Coalition (now NewBridge Madison) and the Northside Planning Council.

Prior to practicing law, Stewart worked for the Assembly for six years on administrative
rules. He has been married to Pamela Hanson-Stewart, an educator, for thirty years.

The seat currently is held by Representative Melissa Sargent who recently announced her
intention to run for Wisconsin’s 16 th Senate District upon the retirement of Senator Mark Miller.
