WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), a member of the House of Representative’s China Task Force, today applauded U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to the Wisconsin State Capitol. During the visit, Secretary Pompeo addressed the Wisconsin State Senate to warn lawmakers of the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to influence federal, state, and local governments. “Secretary Pompeo’s speech makes clear that the Chinese Communist Party’s malign influence campaign isn’t a one-off – it’s a concentrated effort that extends from Hollywood to the NBA to the Wisconsin State Capitol,” said Rep. Gallagher. “I’m glad he traveled to Madison to raise the public’s awareness of this important issue, and hope that any official targeted by the Chinese Communist Party’s influence peddling follows the Roth playbook in pushing back.”
Secretary Pompeo’s visit comes after Wisconsin State Senate President Roger Roth received multiple messages from the Chinese Consulate asking him to introduce a resolution that praised China’s handling of the Coronavirus outbreak. Instead of caving to their request, State Senator Roth introduced a resolution condemning the Party for the role it played in misleading the world on the virus.
Earlier this year, Rep. Gallagher received a letter from the same Consulate official that contacted State Senator Roth expressing concerns that he signed onto a resolution introduced by Rep. Jim Banks condemning the Chinese Communist Party’s handling of the outbreak.
