WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Mike Gallagher, a member of the NDAA Conference Committee, today released the following statement after the House passed the NDAA Conference Report by a vote of 335 to 78 to 1.
“Having served in the Marine Corps, I believe our highest duty in Congress is to ensure our men and women in uniform have the resources they need to complete their mission and get home safe,” said Rep. Gallagher. “This year’s National Defense Authorization Act accomplishes this by taking aggressive action to counter the Chinese Communist Party, strengthening America’s cyber defenses, and fully funding the Future Frigate – ensuring Northeast Wisconsin will play an integral role in building our Navy. While this bill isn’t perfect, when it comes to America’s national security, we can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”
The final report features a number of items Rep. Gallagher championed, such as:
  • 26 recommendations made by the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, including the creation of a National Cyber Director within the White House and Continuity of the Economy Planning
  • Language similar to the Taiwan Defense Act, which helps ensure that the Department of Defense has capabilities and resources necessary to defeat a Chinese invasion of Taiwan
  • The creation of the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, which would include $2.2 billion of investments in new programs to modernize US posture and capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region
  • An independent study of the Chinese defense industrial base so we better understand its vulnerabilities
  • An amendment to help combat PLA-affiliated research institutions that steal technology from US campuses
