Congresswoman Moore supported Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John Larson’s legislation (H.R. 8171– Save our Social Security Now Act and H. J. Res 94) to overturn President Trump’s executive action to defer payroll taxes from September 2020 to December 2020. In response, she released the following statement:
“Trump’s presidential memorandum provides no relief to the millions unemployed during the economic crisis and may harm the employees who would be subjected to deferral As is, the ‘relief’ provided by the President simply shifts when employees will pay these taxes, meaning those affected will see smaller paychecks in four months. Just one of the reasons employers are wary of participating in this scheme – employers that have a choice, that is. The Administration has forced federal employees, including members of the military, to participate. Additionally, the President is attempting to blatantly bypass bipartisan opposition in Congress to any permanent payroll tax scheme, claiming that if he is re-elected he would convince Congress to forgive the amounts deferred.
Perhaps worst of all, the President’s action threatens the integrity of the Social Security program and the benefits workers earn by paying into the system during their working years. In these uncertain times, we should be doing everything possible to strengthen Social Security, which is the most effective anti-poverty program in our country, keeping seniors and children from falling through the cracks of poverty. I join Rep. Larson and my Ways and Means colleagues in standing up for the Social Security program and the millions that it supports.”
