The polls are open in northern Wisconsin’s 7th CD in a special election to fill the seat left vacant in September by the resignation of former GOP U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy.

State Sen. Tom Tiffany, R-Minocqua, faces Dem opponent and Wausau School Board President Tricia Zunker in today’s election.

The polls close at 8 p.m.

Election Commission data show 27 percent of voters in the 7th CD have requested absentee ballots, with more than 18 percent of voters reported as returning the ballots.

The latest update from the Elections Commission shows 112,892 absentee ballots were requested, 100,024 mailed and 76,259 returned. The deadline for absentee ballots to be returned is 8 p.m. today.

There’s often a lag on those numbers as local clerks enter data into the statewide voter system.

By comparison, 36 percent of the state’s nearly 3.4 million registered voters requested an absentee ballot ahead of the April 7 election.

Voters are also expected to go personally to the polls, which are open with the help of the Wisconsin National Guard.
