Madison – Today, Senator Devin LeMahieu (R-Oostburg) delivered the weekly Republican Radio Address in response to the Tuesday riots in Madison.

“Hi, this is State Senator Devin LeMahieu.
“This week, there were alarming riots in downtown Madison.
“Outside the State Capitol, rioters broke numerous windows, shattered lamps, and attempted to force entry into the building. Two historic statues were torn down. One was of an anti-slavery Civil War hero. The second statue was recently used to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage.
“In addition, multiple government buildings were vandalized. Glass was broken at the Tommy Thompson Center. A Molotov cocktail was thrown into a local government building, and a fire was set at the Dane County jail.
“Shockingly, my colleague State Senator Tim Carpenter was assaulted while taking a cellphone video of the lawlessness.
“Peaceful protests are fundamental to our republic. But these violent riots cannot be tolerated. Governor Tony Evers has the duty to protect our beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol. The Mayor of Madison cannot be afraid to use Madison Police to protect law abiding citizens and their property.
“The time for excuses is over. Law enforcement needs to be allowed to preserve public safety, and the rioters responsible for this violence and destruction must be held accountable.”
Senator Devin LeMahieu represents the 9th Senate District, which includes portions of Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and Calumet Counties. He is a Member of the Joint Committee on Finance.
