Hi! This is Senator Howard Marklein, representing the 17th Senate District in southwestern Wisconsin. Not only do I represent one of the most beautiful districts in the state, I also serve on the legislature’s budget-writing Joint Finance Committee.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction recently released the estimated general school aids which will be going to our school districts all over the state.

General School Aids are the largest form of state support for public schools in Wisconsin.

For the 2020-21 school year, we will spend $4.9 billion on schools.

This is $163.5 million more, or 3.5% more, than last year.

There are 421 school districts in Wisconsin.

Almost 75% of our school districts will receive more in state aids than last year.

A school district’s general aids can increase or decrease due to changes in local property valuation, district enrollment counts and shared costs.

These amounts are just estimates and DPI will certify these numbers on October 15th.  But for now, these estimates are good news for Wisconsin schools and represent our continued, strong investment in education.
