In a press conference this evening, President Trump announced Judge Amy Coney Barrett as his nomination to the Supreme Court following Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death last week. Barrett, a Notre Dame graduate and mother of seven, has most recently served on the 7th Court of Appeals.
“Judge Amy Coney Barrett will make a wonderful addition to the United States Supreme Court,” stated Heather Weininger, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life. “She has a fair legal doctrine rooted in the Constitution, not politics.  She will not legislate from the bench, but will instead interpret laws, as the judicial branch is responsible to do.”
“We are especially encouraged by Judge Barrett’s record on the life issue,” continued Weininger. “She upholds the value of human life on the bench, in her jurisprudence, and in her personal life. We are thankful to live in a country that protects the freedom of religion. We should all be encouraged to see that Barrett has principled and moral values rooted in biblical faith. Personal faith should never disqualify someone from positions of government leadership.”
Barrett, who has stated that abortion is “always immoral,” is viewed as a threat to Roe v. Wade, the 1973 key decision that legalized abortion nationwide. In recent weeks, her Roman Catholic faith and pro-life values have caused some to paint her as an extremist unworthy of the high court; pro-abortion organizations have already organized opposition to Barrett’s confirmation.
If confirmed, Judge Barrett would be the youngest Supreme Court Justice in United States history, and President Trump’s third Supreme Court appointment.
