Congressional candidate says he erred by claiming $1.3 million D.C. home as his ‘principal residence’

No one running for the U.S. Congress wants to be seen as a Washington insider.
So Roger Polack, a Democrat opposing GOP U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil, had some explaining to do.
That’s because Polack, 37, owns not one but two pricey homes in Washington, D.C., including a $1.3 million residence for which he received a homestead tax exemption this year. A D.C. resident can claim this credit only if the property is “the principal residence (domicile) of the owner/applicant.”

While in Washington, Polack bought two houses, both of which are about a mile southeast of Capitol Hill. One home, bought in 2018, is valued at just under $1.3 million, and the other, purchased in 2013, has a value of $838,010.
Records showed Polack’s family claimed the homestead tax exemption for 2020 on the more expensive residence. He saved $645 as a result of taking the credit.

By this week, city records said the property was “not receiving the Homestead Deduction.” This note was also placed on his property tax bill.
Neither Polack nor his campaign would say when this change was made.
Records show he is still registered to vote in the nation’s capital, and his wife owns an orthodontics practice in D.C. and touts herself as “a proud Capitol Hill resident” on her website. She notes her degree from UW with a “Go Badgers!” cheer.
In November, Polack and his family moved to Caledonia and began renting a 1,208-square foot house.
