Eight GOP candidates filed nomination papers to run for the 37th AD seat left vacant after Republican John Jagler resigned following his election to the state Senate.
Meanwhile, Dem Pete Adams, who lost his reelection bid for the Columbus City Council last month, has also filed nomination papers. Independent Stephen Ratzlaff Jr., a furniture salesman who got 3 percent of the vote in the November election for the Watertown-area seat, has also filed to run.
The GOP candidates include: Dodge County Supv. Cathy Ann Houchin, Watertown; Watertown School Board member Steve Kauffeld; Nick Krueger, a legislative aide who lives in Watertown; Jennifer Meinhardt, an associate professor at Maranatha Baptist University who lives in Watertown; Nathan Pollnow, an auctioneer who lives in Reeseville; Waterloo Mayor Jenifer Lou Quimby; and William Penterman, a legislative aide who lives in Columbus.
Spencer Zimmerman, a Janesville resident and a perennial candidate in legislative special elections, also has filed to run as a Republican. He ran under the Trump Conservative banner in the April special election Jagler won in the 13th SD, taking 4.5 percent of the vote.
Former President Trump won the Assembly seat with 54.4 percent of the vote in November.
The GOP primary will be June 15, while the special election will be July 13.
