GOP redistricting maps headed to Evers following Assembly passage, veto expected

The Assembly approved new GOP-backed legislative and congressional maps today after some Dems berated both the Republicans lines and a proposal from a commission Gov. Tony Evers created. Ahead of two 60-38 votes on the Senate-passed bills, Speaker Robin Vos said the Senate-approved maps drawn by GOP legislative aides adhere to Voting Rights Act requirements better than People’s Maps Commission maps. The Rochester Republican said the GOP maps are compact and contiguous, avoid splitting wards or municipalities, retain core populations and maintain communities of interest. The maps now head to Evers’ desk for consideration, who has vowed to veto them.

Rep. Hintz: Assembly Republicans pass gerrymander 2.0

MADISON — Following the passage of Republicans’ gerrymandered maps, Rep. Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) released the following statement: “In 2011, after signing secrecy oaths to hide their partisan machinations from the public, Republicans passed a gerrymandered map to distort the will of the voters and guarantee a deep red legislature despite an overall purple state. Today, in 2021, Assembly Republicans doubled down on their corrupt actions and their past unconstitutional map by voting to lock in their 2011 gerrymander for another decade. “A functioning democracy putting the people first should be the goal in enacting new maps, and we know that

Rep. Spreitzer: Statement on vote against Republican gerrymander

MADISON – Today, Rep. Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit) released the following statement after voting against the Republican gerrymandered redistricting maps: “I was proud to vote against Robin Vos’s gerrymandered redistricting maps today. As I have since I was elected to the State Assembly, I will continue to fight for fair maps in our state.  Without fair maps, the voice of the people of Wisconsin will continue to go unheard on critical issues — such as BadgerCare expansion, investing in our roads and infrastructure, investing in our students and schools, and promoting open and honest government. “During my time on the Beloit

Rep. Considine: Votes against gerrymandered maps

Madison – Today, the Wisconsin Assembly passed the proposed Republican legislative and congressional maps along party lines. The Senate passed these maps on Monday November 8th. Representative Dave Considine (D-Baraboo) released the following statement on the passage of these maps: “Today I voted against the congressional and legislative maps put forward by legislative leaders. These maps continue to disenfranchise the people of Wisconsin by deepening the gerrymandering already in place. Over the past ten years, we have seen the effects of gerrymandering on our state. The will of the people has been ignored time and time again. By rigging the maps,

Rep. Emerson: Redistricting vote

MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly voted on Republican-authored bills to redraw our legislative maps (AB 625 and AB 624). Rep. Jodi Emerson (D-Eau Claire) released the following statement in response: “These maps are yet another example of the Republican’s disconnect with our state’s voters. The majority of Wisconsinites want a non-partisan map drawing process that ensures every vote is counted equally.  People should choose their elected officials, not the other way around, and these maps prevent the people of Wisconsin from engaging in fair elections.”

MADISON— Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed SB 621, the GOP-introduced rigged maps. The bill cleared the Senate on a party-line vote Monday. Below are statements from lead members of the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition reacting to passage of SB621:   “The people of Wisconsin deserve to have issues like safe drinking water, clean air and

WisGOP: ICYMI – Tony Evers’ maps go down in flames

[Madison, WI] – Tony Evers didn’t get the response he hoped for with his Liberal Maps Commission. In fact, before 17 Democrats including Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz voted against the maps — which Senate Republicans were forced to introduce because no Democrats were interested — Democrats blasted the maps as “a perversion of justice,” a “con,” and “stealing minority representation rights.” Democrats have finally figured out what Republicans have known all along: Tony Evers’ Liberal Maps Commission has been a sham from the beginning. Evers never wanted fair maps; he wanted maps that tilted the scales in Democrats’ favor. The result was maps that failed through every
