MADISON — Today, U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn endorsed Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes and his historic candidacy for the United States Senate in Wisconsin.

Congressman Clyburn’s endorsement has been a critical factor in Democratic races around the country, and his support was widely seen as a turning point for President Biden’s campaign in 2020. Congressman Clyburn is the highest-ranking black lawmaker in Congress, and a former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, whose political arm endorsed Lt. Gov. Barnes last month.

“I am proud to endorse Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes and his historic candidacy for the United States Senate in Wisconsin,” said U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (SC-06). “Mandela is a proven leader who has shown he will always stand up for people from every corner of Wisconsin. The son of a proud union family, Mandela learned firsthand what it takes to work hard and fight to create opportunities for middle-class families. Those are the values that guided Mandela to public service, where he has been a tireless champion for working people in every corner of the state. As Wisconsin’s next Senator, I know Mandela will continue his fight to create opportunities and good jobs across the state, expand access to affordable health care and prescription drugs, and tackle the climate crisis that has impacted so many parts of this country.  Mandela is hands-down the best candidate to defeat Senator Ron Johnson, expand our majority in the United States Senate, and deliver results for the people of Wisconsin.”

“Congressman Clyburn is a voice for equity, opportunity, and justice who has blazed a trail for leaders of all backgrounds to step up and fight for their communities, and that’s why his endorsement is so meaningful here in Wisconsin,” said Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes. “In Washington, Mr. Clyburn and I will work together to deliver quality health care to everyone, tackle the climate crisis that is wreaking havoc on everything from urban communities to family farms, invest in our infrastructure – from expanding rural broadband to repairing roads and bridges – and ultimately, create good jobs and opportunity in every community across Wisconsin.”

Congressman Clyburn’s endorsement comes as Mandela Barnes continues to build a diverse, statewide coalition to defeat Ron Johnson and deliver for Wisconsin working families. Congressman Clyburn joins Senator Elizabeth Warren, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi, over 100 mayors, legislators, and local elected officials from across Wisconsin, End Citizens United, Let America Vote, The Congressional Black Caucus PAC, Collective PAC, Democracy for America, MoveOn, Vote From
Home, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, the Working Families Party, People for the American Way, and the Democratic Lieutenant Governor’s Association in their endorsement of Barnes.
