Lt. Reginald Patterson has submitted his resignation to the Madison Police Department following an internal investigation into officer misconduct. The investigation stems from bystander video showing him engaged in sexual activity inside an MPD-issued vehicle.
The video was captured and posted on social media on Sept. 16. Lt. Patterson was placed on administrative leave that day, as is the normal procedure during internal investigations.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident, and no criminal charges were referred.
An internal investigation found Lt. Patterson violated multiple department policies, and a separation from service was deemed the appropriate action. In light of this, Lt. Patterson submitted his resignation on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
He has apologized for his behavior. He was with the department for 15 years.
The recent actions of Lt. Patterson do not align with the mission of the Madison Police Department. We strive to deliver a high degree of service and are committed to performing our work with the highest degree of honesty and integrity.
