For second consecutive year, the City of Madison is promoting staying active this fall with a special month-long event, Walk-tober. This series of planned activities and events hopes to motivate the public to get out and walk during the month of October.

October is a great month for walking! Temperatures are cooler and the changing fall colors throughout the month are dazzling. Additionally, walking is a great way to boost physical and mental well-being while also staying environmentally friendly. Anyone can walk to work, to the store, hike or walk just for fun.

You can find information about Walk-tober and the scheduled activities online!

Gather ideas and discover routes to explore more than 250 Madison Parks that offer something for everyone. You can also visit Madison Public Libraries to find their walking-themed list of books, activities and encouragements. Learn about the history of our area, the artists that make each Neighborhood special, and see why Madison continues to be voted one of the best places to live!

“Walk-tober celebrates walking and encourages people to get out,” said Pedestrian Bicycle Administrator Renee Callaway. “This event also intends to increase awareness of the value of walking to our residents, visitors, neighborhoods and City both as transportation and as recreation.”

This new event, Walk-tober, offers a handful of planned and independent opportunities:

  • weekly walking route ideas
  • walking themed challenges
  • citywide photo contest
  • suggested reading list
  • school challenge
  • plenty of activities that you can do on your own, or with your household

This is your chance to get out, on foot or by wheel, and experience your neighborhood and additional locations throughout Madison!

Walk-tober is led by Traffic Engineering in partnership with Madison Parks, Madison Public Library, Greater Madison MPO, City of Madison Art’s Commission, City of Madison Community Development Division, Healthy Kids Collaborative of Dane County, Downtown Madison Inc, Madison’s Central Business Improvement District, Wisconsin Bicycle Federation, Latino Chamber of Commerce, UW Madison Chican@ Latin@ Studies and the Dairyland Walkers.

It is always encouraged to practice mindfulness and safety while participating in any event. Remember to stay home if you feel sick, keep physical distance when you are out walking and wear a mask if you will be near others. Public Health Madison Dane County has more information on staying safe and any current Public Health Orders PDF .
