WISCONSIN DOCTORS SLAM REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS FOR REFUSAL TO EXPAND BADGERCARE IN SPECIAL SESSION
MADISON — On Tuesday, the Wisconsin Legislature met for a special session called by Governor Tony Evers for an opportunity to expand Medicaid, known as BadgerCare in the state. Physicians across the state had called on the Legislature to work with Gov. Evers to expand BadgerCare. Yet Republican leaders chose to immediately end the session without taking action on BadgerCare. In response, Dr. Ann Helms, a neurologist in Brookfield released the following statement:
“By refusing to expand BadgerCare, Republican lawmakers failed the 91,000 Wisconsinites who would be able to live fuller, healthier, more productive lives if they could just get access to health care through expansion. We know what happens to our patients when they can’t afford the care they need — small, treatable health issues turn into severe issues that are more difficult and expensive to treat. Republicans could have brought our federal tax dollars home to Wisconsin to help these people, but chose not to. It’s disappointing for our patients and for our whole state.”
