Dane County Executive Joe Parisi, Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, WHEDA Assistant Deputy Secretary May yer Thao, Horizon Senior Development Manager Scott Kwiecinski, County Board Supervisor Chuck Erickson, Madison Alder Tag Evers, and Xong Vang, a resident of Bayview, will take part in a groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of Bayview’s redevelopment at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2021. Bayview Foundation Executive Director Alexis London will emcee the event.

The groundbreaking begins a $50,000,000 redevelopment of the site.  The new Bayview will feature a 48-unit four-story apartment building, a 25-unit three-story apartment building, 57 two-story townhouses, and a 11,000 square foot community center, twice the size of the existing center. The apartments will open in 2022, the townhouses in 2023 and 2024, and the new community center is projected to open in the spring of 2023.

“Bayview is one of Madison’s oldest and most successful affordable housing communities,” noted Executive Director Alexis London. “For more than 50 years, Bayview has helped make Madison safer and more equitable.  The improvements that we are making will enable us to almost double the number of residents who live here, initiate new services and programs, and expand our reach. Breaking ground on the new housing units which are the first phase of the improvements, is an exciting and important moment for all of us – staff, residents, and allies – at Bayview.”

More than 90% of the fundraising for the entire project is complete. The remaining $4,000,000 will be raised with a Capital Fundraising Campaign, chaired by Natalie Erdman, a widely respected leader on affordable housing and redevelopment. Before her retirement, Erdman served as Madison’s Director of Planning and Community and Economic Development and as Director of the Community Development Authority.

“I am very excited to lead the Campaign to raise the final $4,000,000 that is needed to complete the community center, gardens, and outdoor gathering spaces,” Erdman said.

Limited parking for the groundbreaking event will be available in Bayview’s main parking lot at 601 Bay View. Additional street parking is available at Brittingham Park’s lot on West Washington Avenue and along Braxton Place. Signs will direct media and visitors to the groundbreaking location. More information about the project can be found at bayviewfoundation.org/bayview-rising.
