DPW Statement on Republicans Ending Special Session Without Passing BadgerCare Expansion And Economic Development Projects

Wisconsin Republican Lawmakers Reject $1.6 Billion in Federal Dollars for Wisconsin’s Economy

MADISON, Wis. — Today, Wisconsin Republicans did absolutely nothing to help Wisconsinites. Lawmakers abruptly ended the special session of the legislature without passing BadgerCare expansion and the $1 billion in economic development projects that would be paid for by the cost savings of expansion. Gov. Evers called for the special session last week to support Wisconsin’s economic recovery. Expanding BadgerCare would have covered 90,900 Wisconsinites and saved the state $1.6 billion over the next two years.

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement:

“Wisconsin Republicans had the opportunity to do the right thing today. Instead, they turned down over a billion dollars that would have benefited Wisconsin families and refused to expand access to health care — all in the name of partisan politics. Gov. Evers has tried to work with Republicans to help our state bounce back better from the pandemic, but at every turn, Republicans have played political games. They have tried to slow down pandemic relief, gutted proposals supported by the majority of Wisconsinites from the state budget, and now they’ve turned down billions in federal dollars for the second time, for no good reason other than to spite the governor and prove their loyalty to the GOP.

“Our state is recovering from a once-in-a-lifetime health crisis. This is not the time to block funds our communities urgently need. This is the moment to rebuild a new economy that works for every Wisconsinite by implementing Governor Evers’ Badger Bounceback agenda. When are Wisconsin Republicans going to end the partisan obstructionism and start working with Governor Evers to secure our state’s future?”
