UW-Madison’s First Female Chancellor, UW Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee, and former Congresswoman: “I can’t think of anyone better to serve in the U.S. Senate than my friend, Sarah Godlewski.”
MADISON –Former University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor, U.S Health and Human Services Secretary, and Congresswoman Donna Shalala today endorsed Sarah Godlewski for U.S. Senate, praising the Eau Claire native and State Treasurer as part of a “new generation of progressive leaders” and someone who “listens, and then she rolls up her sleeves to get the job done.”
“During my time in Wisconsin, I learned that Wisconsinites really care about the future of their state, and it’s time for Wisconsin to elect a new generation of progressive leaders. Sarah Godlewski is a businesswoman, an outstanding public servant, a community activist, a fifth-generation Wisconsinite, and a working mom. I can’t think of anyone better to serve in the U.S. Senate than my friend, Sarah Godlewski,” said Former Congresswoman Donna Shalala. “The great leaders that have come out of Wisconsin understand people’s lives and deliver for Wisconsinites. That’s what Sarah does, she listens, and then she rolls up her sleeves to get the job done. I’m proud to endorse Sarah Godlewski for U.S. Senate.”
Shalala served as UW-Madison Chancellor from 1988-1993, making history as the university’s first female chancellor and the first woman to lead a Big Ten school. In 2018, she was inducted into the UW Athletic Hall of Fame for being a “catalyst for turning around UW athletics”. Shalala along with Pat Richter and Barry Alvarez “helped change the face of UW athletics.”
Shalala also served as Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for Policy during the Carter Administration and Secretary of Health and Human Services during the Clinton Administration. She served in Congress representing Florida’s 27th Congressional District during the 116th Congress.
“Donna Shalala is a trailblazer whose lifetime of public service has improved countless lives in Wisconsin and across our country,” said State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski. “She knows how to build winning teams in Wisconsin, and she understands that Wisconsinites want leaders unafraid to stand up for them against the powerful special interests. I can’t wait to fight for Wisconsin workers and families in the Senate, whether by taking on the pharmaceutical industry to rein in prescription drug costs, the fossil fuel companies so we can stop climate change, or radical Trumpsim so we can defend our democracy, defeat the pandemic, and create economic prosperity for everyone, not just the rich and corporations.”
Sarah has also received over 40 endorsements from current and former Wisconsin elected officials, from Superior to Janesville, and all points in between. She has also been endorsed by Vote Mama and EMILY’s List – an early and important backer in both of Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s Senate campaigns.
