MILWAUKEE — Dr. Natalie Carnes, associate professor of theology at Baylor University, will deliver the annual Theotokos Lecture in a virtual format at 4 p.m., Thursday, March 4.
Carnes is a systematic theologian with strong interests in constructive theology, including patristic and feminist theology.
Carnes’ lecture will offer a feminist theological examination of the meanings to be found in imagery related to the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially the icon “Our Lady of Ferguson,” which depicts the Mother of God and her Christ child as Black, and targeted.
Through her work, Carnes pioneers a Mariology that can serve as a resource in addressing the concerns of women and people of color alike, in the process discovering an image of the Virgin that can bless everyone.
Carnes has written articles for several publications including Modern Theology, Journal of Religion and Scottish Journal of Theology. Carnes has also written three books on various theological concepts.
Registration for the lecture is free and available online. Registrants will be provided a link to the virtual event via email.The annual Theotokos Lecture is organized by Marquette’s Department of Theology. The lecture is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Theotokos or Mother of God.
