MILWAUKEE – Today the Board of Supervisors adopted [11-6] the 2022 Milwaukee County Budget. Adopted budget amendments made substantial investments in the county park system as well as initiatives to advance racial and health equity.
“I am proud of the hard work we have done to adopt a budget while following the guiding principles of racial equity, preparation, collaboration, sustainability, and decorum that I put forth at the beginning of this process,” said Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson. “By building on County Executive Crowley’s budget, we have provided much-needed investments in our park system administered through a racial equity lens which will benefit residents across all of Milwaukee County.”
Among the budget amendments adopted Monday is an omnibus amendment sponsored by Chairwoman Nicholson, Finance Committee Chairman Jason Haas, and Supervisors Joseph J. Czarnezki, Liz Sumner, Shawn Rolland, Ryan Clancy, and Sequanna Taylor which would add more than $1.6 million to the Parks Department budget to address mission critical needs in the park system, allocate an additional $90,000 to install traffic slowing devices at numerous parkways and parking lots within the park system, and provide funding for six Lead Park Ranger positions.
“Each year’s budget process is challenging and I’m proud of the budget we’ve passed,” said Supervisor Haas. “It preserves core services and provides funding to our Parks Department for critical needs, but because of the lack of shared revenue from the State and inability to raise our own revenue at the County level, our future is still uncertain.”
The 2022 Adopted Budget sets the Milwaukee County property tax levy at $309,462,284 which is $116,089 less than what County Executive David Crowley proposed. This represents a 1.81% increase over the 2021 levy of $303,968,779. Expenditures are set at $1,283,390,309.
The Adopted Budget now goes to County Executive Crowley’s desk for approval. County Executive Crowley has until Friday, November 12 to issue vetoes. If the County Executive issues any vetoes, the Board will convene on Monday, November 15 at 1:30 p.m.
