Washington, DC – Wednesday, January 20, 2021 – Today, the National Task Force on Election Crises released the following statement in response to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ inauguration:

In accordance with the Constitution, President Biden and Vice President Harris were sworn into office today, January 20th. The National Task Force on Election Crises (NTFEC) thanks the countless Americans who worked to protect our democratic process, ensured that the voters decided the outcome of this election, and safeguarded an arduous but ultimately successful transfer of power. Today’s inauguration marks the coda to an unprecedented election season marred in the end by disinformation, violence, and tragedy. While the NTFEC’s core mission—ensuring a free and fair 2020 presidential election—was successful, our democracy has been weakened and deep cracks in our systems have been exposed. To that end, the Task Force has published a report on the lessons learned from the 2020 election and recommendations for how we can strengthen our elections in the future. Even as Americans reel from the overwhelming events of the last few months, now is the time to fix the way we run elections in order to ensure that the country will weather future crises of similar magnitude, and that our democracy emerges stronger from this time of trial.
