Appleton, WI –  U.S. Senate candidate Tom Nelson released the following statement on President Biden’s American Families Plan:

“President Biden has already done a tremendous job focusing on needles and checks to the American people as we recover from the COVID crisis. Now we need to invest in infrastructure, both physical and human capital. The American Families Plan is an important step to tax the rich to invest in universal free preschool, paid family leave, child care, and two free years of community college. The COVID crisis has shown the desperate need for universal health care. However, I believe it would be a missed opportunity if Congress chooses to continue subsidizing for-profit insurance companies with Affordable Care Act subsidies instead of expanding Medicare. If I were in the U.S. Senate, I’d be joining Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Tammy Baldwin in demanding that we lower the Medicare eligibility age to 60, expand Medicare to include hearing, dental, and vision coverage, and permit Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices with pharmaceutical companies.

I applaud President Biden’s important vision for Wisconsin families he is proposing in the American Families Plan, but we cannot let health insurance and pharmaceutical companies continue to gouge us. Medicare expansion makes both fiscal and moral sense. And ultimately what we need is Medicare for All so that no American ever has to worry about going bankrupt because of healthcare.”
