MADISON – State Representative Marisabel Cabrera (D-Milwaukee) released the  following statement regarding the termination of Executive Order #104:

“Today in what has become another routine display of political gamesmanship, the Republican’s in the Wisconsin State Assembly voted to strike down Governor Evers’ latest public health emergency and mask mandate.

“People look to elected officials for leadership in times of crisis. From the very beginning of this pandemic, we have known that mask wearing is an essential tool in slowing and preventing the spread of COVID throughout our communities. Our medical community continues advising the public that the best course of action is to wear masks. Still, Republicans continue to espouse their extreme anti-science and anti-public health views at the expense of the health and lives of Wisconsinites, our children’s education, and our economy. What is more, Republicans have charged ahead with this action without first determining how it would impact federal funding our friends and neighbors rely on to make ends meet.

“Even though Republicans will claim political victory for striking down Governor Evers’ public health emergency, the COVID-19 crisis will not magically go away. Striking down Governor Evers’ public health measures sends a misleading message to the public that we are past the threat of COVID-19 and that there will be no consequences to eliminating the declared public health emergency.

“In Wisconsin, we pride ourselves on being good neighbors and for caring for one another. I encourage everyone in my district to continue wearing a mask to protect the community. Wearing a mask is a small sacrifice to stop the spread of COVID-19 and save lives.”
