TOMAH, WI — Rep. Mike Gallagher (WI-08), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Military Personnel, today visited Fort McCoy alongside Reps. Glenn Grothman (WI-06), Bryan Steil (WI-01), Tom Tiffany (WI-07), and Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05). During their visit, the members toured the facility and received a briefing from Major General Guthrie on the steps being taken to process refugees from Afghanistan.
“President Biden’s incompetent and dangerous withdrawal in Afghanistan, as well as their lack of a plan for Afghan Special Immigrant Visa processing, has raised significant questions about his administration’s ability to handle the next steps of this crisis,” said Rep. Gallagher. “Today’s visit provided us with important information regarding Fort McCoy’s processing of Afghans and made one thing clear: Wisconsinites should be proud of the soldiers at Fort McCoy who have gone above and beyond to take care of the Afghans they are receiving. Yet there is still no coherent process in place for processing SIV-eligible Afghans or dealing with “parolees” who can simply walk off the base if they so choose. Moreover, if President Biden remains committed to his arbitrary August 31st surrender date, he will be leaving Americans stranded behind enemy lines and potentially creating a dangerous hostage situation. I urge him to reconsider before more Americans lose their lives.”
