MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly voted to overturn Governor Tony Evers’ statewide mask order. Despite ever-increasing cases of COVID-19 in Wisconsin and strong public support for mask orders, Republicans decided to jeopardize Wisconsinites’ health and safety. In response to today’s Assembly vote, Rep. Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton) issued the following statement:

“We will get back to a new normal soon if we all take precautions now. We have to continue to socially distance and mask up so we can see our loved ones at the end of this. That’s my goal. The only way we get there is if we work together. We can do this, folks.

“Not only is this legislature taking away our best tool in fighting this virus today, but we have unmasked another spiteful power display by the majority party.

“Removing the mask mandate delays building back our economy. It worsens the loss of life. It makes it harder for schools and businesses to operate safely. Rather than helping Wisconsin get through this pandemic, the majority party is more interested in playing political games with people’s lives.

“Republicans were prideful today doing something so blatantly unsafe and unhelpful. We all must be patriotic and step up for our community by simply wearing a mask so we can finally see the end to this nightmare.”
