MADISON – Today, Assembly Republicans approved Senate Joint Resolution 3 despite bipartisan opposition, and also approved a politically-charged version of Assembly Bill 1, taking action to repeal Wisconsin’s statewide mask order in the coming days. In response, Assembly Democratic Leader Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) released the following statement:

“Today’s actions by the majority of Assembly Republicans ignore the reality Wisconsin is facing right now. As we work to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible, we also face the emergence of more contagious COVID variants in our state. Now is the time when we need everyone to be wearing a mask everywhere to reduce transmission of this virus as we work to vaccinate the people of our state. For the last 295 days, Republicans prioritized stopping Governor Evers from protecting Wisconsinites’ health and safety while refusing to take legislative action. And now, they are working to eliminate the most effective public health measures we have in fighting COVID-19 and proposing a piecemeal approach that will not even come close to protecting our state.

“Public health is the same today as it was yesterday. Science is the same today as it was yesterday. Common sense is the same today as it was yesterday. But COVID-19 is becoming more contagious and Assembly Republicans are prioritizing undermining Governor Evers and placating an extreme anti-science movement. I was proud to join my Democratic colleagues in fighting to keep our statewide mask order and protect our constituents. We will continue to do so, no matter how many times Republicans double-down on Trump-style minimization of COVID-19 and insistence on preventing our government from helping to protect our state.”
