MADISON – Rep. Lee Snodgrass (D-Appleton) released the following statement regarding Transgender Awareness week and Transgender Day of Remembrance.

“Transgender people of all ages face higher rates of violence, harassment, and discrimination. One in five transgender people have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives and continue to face significant barriers to equitable employment, housing, and health care.

“Transgender Awareness week, observed annually between November 13-19, culminates with Transgender Day of Remembrance on the 20th, when we remember those transgender individuals tragically lost through violence. Throughout this week, the LGBTQ+ community uplifts the voices and experiences of the transgender and nonbinary community by addressing issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that our transgender and nonbinary friends face.”

“I urge our fellow Wisconsinites to take action and educate themselves on the challenges and inequities our transgender and nonbinary community members face and commit to work together to make Wisconsin a place where we can all safely embrace our authentic selves.”
