MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly will take up a Republican sponsored resolution, AJR 80, which would create a directive for the upcoming legislative redistricting process. While Republicans included provisions required by the Wisconsin Constitution in AJR 80, they added measures to protect incumbents and maintain Republican power through gerrymandered maps. Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“The fact remains that Wisconsin citizens should choose their elected representatives, not the other way around. Regardless of political affiliation, Wisconsinites overwhelmingly support a fair redistricting process, fair maps, and a means to hold their elected officials accountable. Our democracy works best when it works for everyone and is free of partisan gerrymandering.

“Over the past few weeks, we have seen the partisan antics of Republicans and their allies regarding the redistricting process in both state and federal courts. They will stop at nothing to maintain their power, as is evident in provisions of this resolution designed to protect incumbents and current district lines. Ultimately, the maps and their boundaries will impact Wisconsin for the next decade, and our democracy is too important to allow another Republican gerrymander of our state.”

Rep. Subeck has represented the 78th Assembly District since 2015 and serves as vice-chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.
