MADISON – Yesterday, Governor Tony Evers called a special session of the Wisconsin Legislature to expand BadgerCare in Wisconsin. Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) released the following statement in response to the governor’s announcement.

“Wisconsin has already waited far too long to seize the opportunity to expand BadgerCare and increase access to affordable health care. BadgerCare expansion would provide much-needed health care coverage to more than 90,000 uninsured and underinsured Wisconsinites while saving $624 million in state taxpayer money. Wisconsin lags behind our neighboring states, all of whom have accepted federal funding to expand healthcare.

Nationally, red and blue and purple states alike have accepted federal funds to expand healthcare, yet, Wisconsin Republicans have dug in their heels and refused, putting their partisan political games ahead of the health of Wisconsin families. I hope this Special Session on BadgerCare expansion may finally push Republicans in the legislature to do what is morally right and fiscally sound by accepting federal funds to expand BadgerCare.”
