MADISON – Today, a public hearing was held on Senate Bills 621 and 622, the Republicans’ proposed legislative and congressional maps, at the Wisconsin State Capitol. State Representative Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa) is a co-author of a bill to create nonpartisan redistricting reform in Wisconsin, and introduced this legislation in the 2019-2020 legislative session. Rep. Vining issued the following statement on today’s public hearing:

“Republican legislators are trying to gerrymander our state for another ten years by passing manipulated maps – they are making it clear to the public once again that they will do anything to hold onto power. The GOP maps were drawn in secret with no effort put towards working across the aisle for the greater good of all Wisconsinites. The current maps are biased and unfair, and the proposed maps from Republicans are even worse.

“The vast majority of Wisconsinites from across the political spectrum want a nonpartisan process for creating legislative and congressional districts. The GOP maps continue to ignore the will of the people and create districts that insulate legislators from accountability to their constituents. Under these manipulated GOP maps, Republicans will continue to ignore the issues that matter most to Wisconsinites, from pandemic relief and recovery efforts to affordable, accessible healthcare, to funding public education, to gun violence prevention and more.

“I was proud to author the bipartisan Fair Maps bill last session and to co-sponsor it again this session because the will of the people is the law of the land, and the voice of the people is the heart of our state. Voters should choose their politicians, not the other way around. The people of Wisconsin want and deserve fair maps, and I stand with the people of Wisconsin.”

Rep. Vining represents the 14th Assembly District, which includes parts of Brookfield, Wauwatosa, and Milwaukee. For more information, visit Rep. Vining’s website here
