MADISON – Fort McCoy, a military installation in Wisconsin, has begun receiving refugees from Afghanistan. State Representative Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa) released the following statement in response:

“Wisconsin is proud to welcome refugees from Afghanistan to Wisconsin. The families and individuals arriving at Fort McCoy deserve our support and compassion as they may be experiencing trauma and grief.

“Over the last 20 years, Afghans have supported U.S. troops and operations, making them now vulnerable to Taliban retaliation. They risked their lives and the lives of their families to assist the United States. Afghans have been our allies, and they are now our neighbors — they welcomed us, and now we welcome them.

“Afghan families and individuals arriving at Fort McCoy have been thoroughly vetted by the federal government, and officials at Fort McCoy are doing biometric screening for every refugee, and will be taking appropriate health precautions related to the pandemic.

“Please join me in welcoming the individuals and families from Afghanistan here to Wisconsin with love and gratitude in our hearts.”
