MADISON – Today, the Joint Legislative Audit Committee held a public hearing on the Legislative Audit Bureau’s Audit 21.19 of the election administration of the 2020 election. The audit, released in October, showed that the 2020 election was safe and secure.

The Democratic members of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee released the following statement:

“Despite all the challenges our local election officials faced in the midst of unprecedented circumstances, there is still no evidence to prove any claims that proponents of The Big Lie peddle.

“In order to continue supporting our local clerks and their integral work, the legislature should prioritize increasing resources for training, technology, and staffing. It is irresponsible, and simply untrue, for Republicans to continue insinuating that the 2020 election wasn’t administered appropriately. The testimony today, rather, shows us that there are recommendations that can be instituted to support Wisconsin’s voters, with particular regard to improving access and accommodations for Wisconsinites.

“The spark that started this audit was one based on a lie and conspiracy theories – not based on a hope to support and build a more safe, secure, accurate, and fair election process.  It is clear that local governments, clerks, and Wisconsinites are interested and eager to strengthen our elections. But Wisconsinites are not interested in a witch hunt or politicizing our election process.

“We appreciate those who took the time to answer questions of the committee and those who were involved in the audit. Hearing directly from our state’s clerks, and organizations committed to fair and safe elections’ process helps us understand the many challenges that were faced by the workers and volunteers who make our elections possible, and those faced by voters, especially during the unique difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Because of the work done by the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau, we can show, yet again, that our elections were safe, secure, fair, and accurate. The Big Lie is over, we must move on.”
