MADISON, WI – Sen. Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) issued the following statement in response to the Legislative Audit Bureau’s (LAB’s) release of audit results on “Election Administration.”  The results of this audit were released on Friday, October 22, 2021.

“I am currently reviewing the audit report which made 30 recommendations, including 18 items that may involve legislation. We have taken action on a number of these items in legislation that has already been vetoed by Governor Tony Evers, but we will consider our options.

The Joint Audit Committee, of which I am a member, will hold a hearing with the LAB and the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) in the coming weeks. I look forward to a thorough discussion of the results of the audit.

We will continue to explore our legislative options. The audit showed us that there are clearly gaps in law that we need to address.

Unfortunately, Governor Evers has already vetoed several bills that would have addressed a number of the audit’s findings.

The bottom-line is that voters must be able to trust our elections and we have an audit that shows us where we can improve.  I will continue to work on this important issue.”
