MADISON – Today marks the beginning of Wisconsin’s 105th legislative session. Senator Jeff Smith (D – Brunswick) released the following statement looking forward to the 2021-22 session:
“Like most Wisconsinites, I am eager for the State Legislature to begin this session and get straight to work. Wisconsinites have already waited long enough for the Republican Majority Party to call the Legislature into session to provide relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regrettably, the only action taken by Republicans today contradicts the advice of public health professionals and increases the risk of COVID-19 exposure.
“In the first two years serving as State Senator for the 31st Senate District, I listened closely to constituents’ needs and ideas. Together, we identified priorities to move western Wisconsin forward: improve broadband access, expand Medicaid, support our family farmers and strengthen our public schools. Knowing many of these priorities were unmet, the last legislative session restored our call for non-partisan redistricting reform in order to achieve these goals.
“There’s a lot of work to do and there’s no shortage of good ideas from last session that were ignored. I come prepared with a full agenda to help our state recover from the ongoing public health crisis. As Democratic Caucus Chair, I’m committed to working with legislative leaders and members on both sides of the aisle toward our shared goal of strengthening Wisconsin for our future generations.”
