The way to improve the relationship between the community and law enforcement is to improve police accountability, community involvement and transparency – the principles of the PACT, authored by myself, Senator Lena Taylor and Senator Alberta Darling.
It is encouraging that the Task Force is supporting the proposals (2021 Senate Bills 118 & 120-124) that I unveiled with Senators Darling and Taylor last summer, and I hope that means they will soon become law. Those bills have already had public hearings and I expect them to be taken up by the full Senate soon.
I’ve been watching the Task Force and have already had productive conversations with Representative Steineke about the Task Force recommendations. To the extent there are new legislative ideas, I will review them with an open mind and hope we will reach agreement. However, I will not support anything that jeopardizes public safety or the safety of our law enforcement officers.”
