MADISON – Today, Democratic members of the State Senate and Assembly introduced legislation to help  address gun violence in Wisconsin. The bills include extreme risk protection orders (ERPOs) and universal background checks on gun sales.

Representative Conley released the following statement following the bills’ introduction:

“Gun violence is a pervasive issue that touches every corner of Wisconsin. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their communities. Yet, here in Wisconsin, many firearm sales continue to be conducted without  necessary background checks. I am proud to co-sponsor legislation that will help take common sense steps to address the gun violence epidemic we face.

“Both extreme risk protection orders and universal background checks have been proven to prevent incidents of gun violence and save lives. Extreme risk protection orders provide a swift, effective way for  family members to remove guns from a loved one in crisis. Our friends, families, neighbors, and communities all deserve to feel safe. The legislature needs to take pragmatic steps to address firearm injury prevention. With 80% of Wisconsinites supporting ERPO legislation and universal background checks, it is time to listen to the voices of the people of Wisconsin and take meaningful action to prevent  gun violence in our state.”
