State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski: Expanding BadgerCare and Reinvesting $1.6 Billion is a Win-Win for Wisconsin
State Treasurer calls on Republican-led legislature to pass Governor Evers’ proposal to expand access to healthcare and put cost savings towards economic development projects in special session
MADISON, Wis. — Today, the Wisconsin state legislature has been called to convene a special session per Governor Evers’ Executive Order #116. State Treasurer Godlewski released the following statement urging legislators to take meaningful action on expanding access to healthcare and economic recovery:

Governor Tony Evers called today’s special session with a dignified purpose: expand access to BadgerCare for over 90,000 Wisconsinites and generate over $1.6 billion in cost savings, and to use $1 billion in COVID-19 relief to invest in projects across the state that will boost workers and communities into a stronger economic recovery.

Republican Speaker Robin Vos has responded by holding health care funding and economic relief hostage – and leaving Wisconsin paying the tab for the rest of the country’s Medicaid benefits and getting zilch in return. Even states like Indiana and Oklahoma passed Medicaid expansion and are using our tax dollars to pay for it.

As Wisconsin’s fiscal watchdog, I find these actions financially reckless. Robin Vos and Republican politicians need to finally do right by Wisconsin and expand BadgerCare and put working families ahead of partisan politics.
