Fitzgerald Tours Fort McCoy, Receives Briefing on Afghan Refugees
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05) joined the Wisconsin Republican delegation at Fort McCoy to tour the facilities, receive a briefing on the operational procedures in place, and learn about steps being taken to process refugees from Afghanistan.
“I want to thank Major General Guthrie and the 88th Readiness Division for hosting me this afternoon, as well as the State Department staff who briefed us on the ongoing resettlement effort at Fort McCoy. I appreciate learning more about the Department’s plan to assist these Afghan refugees and their families, and what resources Congress can provide to improve their capacity and capability to carry out this mission,” said Congressman Fitzgerald.
“While today’s visit was productive, I remain concerned about the indefinite housing of applicants while they await final processing, as well as the health and security risks this sudden influx of refugees poses to local communities. These refugees should never have had to leave Afghanistan, but unfortunately the absence of leadership from the White House has led to deadly and catastrophic consequences. A long-term, sustainable solution to this problem is necessary, and I will continue working with my colleagues in the House of Representatives to deliver just that.”
