Rep. Ron Kind Announces Tax Credit to Help Small Businesses Cover Cost of Paid Leave is Extended through September

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Ron Kind announced that the IRS will continue to provide tax credits to Wisconsin small businesses to help cover the costs of paid sick and family leave for workers through September. Workers can use the leave to care for themselves or family who are sick, as well as get their COVID-19 vaccine and recover if they experience temporary side effects. Rep. Kind helped to secure this tax credit extension as part of the American Rescue Plan.

“Our small businesses are the engine of our local economies, but they were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Rep. Ron Kind. “This tax credit will help communities across Wisconsin crush this virus while ensuring small businesses can keep their doors open and workers safe.”

Through the American Rescue Plan, employers with less than 500 employees may receive up to $17,110 per employee to provide workers with up to 10 days of paid sick leave and up to 12 weeks of paid family leave, from April 1 through September 30, 2021. Certain self-employed individuals in similar circumstances are entitled to similar credits as well as schools, public hospitals and other state and local government employers.

Rep. Kind is a member of the Ways and Means Committee, the most powerful – and the oldest – committee in the House of Representatives. It has jurisdiction over tax measures, the management of public debt, trade and tariff laws, Social Security, Medicare, pensions, and many other economic growth measures.
