Washington, DC —Today, Rep. Ron Kind voted to pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act. This historic reform package will take big money out of politics, end the culture of corruption in Washington, and support voting rights for American citizens. The package also includes provisions to end partisan gerrymandering and bolster voting system security.
“The For the People Act puts the power back where it belongs—in the hands of Wisconsin voters,” said Rep. Ron Kind. “This sweeping reform package will hold our elected officials to a higher ethical standard, take big money out of politics, and make it easier for our citizens to participate in our democracy—most importantly, it gets Congress back working For the People.”
This package includes crucial reforms across key areas:
- Voting Rights: H.R. 1 will implement automatic voter registration across the country, expand early voting and voting by mail, restore the Voting Rights Act, prohibit voter roll purges, and end partisan gerrymandering. It will also enhance voting system security and modernization.
- Campaign Finance: H.R. 1 will require any organization involved in political activity to disclose large donors, create an individual multiple matching system for small donations so Wisconsinites can exercise their due influence against dark money and secret donors, and strengthen enforcement of campaign finance laws within the Federal Election Commission.
- Ethics and Accountability: H.R. 1 will strengthen ethics laws by expanding conflict of interest laws and divestment requirements, and require presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns. The bill will also overhaul the Office of Government Ethics, giving watchdogs more resources to enforce the law, close loopholes, and establish a code of ethics for the Supreme Court.
- Election Security: H.R. 1 will provide funding for states to replace outdated voting machines, create a national commission to protect democratic institutions and counter threats, and invest in research and development to improve the security of our election infrastructure.
