Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced that it is providing $996.8 million in Fiscal Year 2022 for Wisconsin under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Senator Baldwin supported the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, which was signed into law in November.

“We are already seeing how the bipartisan infrastructure bill will allow us to create good paying jobs and put Wisconsin to work fixing our roads and bridges,” said Senator Baldwin. “These federal funds, which not one Wisconsin congressional Republican voted for, are just the beginning as we work to get the job done repairing our aging infrastructure and make our roads and bridges safer and more resilient for the future.”

The FHWA announced this week that it is providing $52.5 billion nationwide through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This funding will help reduce the backlog of major repairs for highways and bridges and increase the number of communities that have strategies to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries. More federal infrastructure funding for Wisconsin is expected to be announced in the near future and will help the state upgrade other critical infrastructure, including public transportation, mass-transit, rail, ports, and airports.

Baldwin previously announced Wisconsin will receive $142.7 million in infrastructure funding to rebuild the state’s water infrastructure and at least $100 million to expand and improve broadband across the state. In total, the bipartisan infrastructure legislation is expected to provide Wisconsin with over $5 billion in federal highway formula funding over the next five years for highways and bridges. On an average annual basis, this is about 27 percent more than the State’s earlier Federal-aid highway formula funding.

Federal-aid Highway Program funds are authorized periodically by Congress in multi-year laws to assist the States in providing for construction, reconstruction, and improvement of highways and bridges on eligible Federal-aid routes and for other special purpose programs and projects. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law establishes or continues FHWA programs and authorizes funding for those programs from the Highway Trust Fund.
