WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) delivered remarks on Wednesday during the Government Operations & Border Management Subcommittee hearing on the non-governmental organization perspective on the Southwest border crisis.

“ I think it’s important to recognize, I know people disagreed with the Return to Mexico policy — some of the agreements we had with Mexico and Central America, but you have to admit it did solve the problem in terms of reducing the flow of children and family units coming in and exploiting our broken asylum system and that was well before the Covid crisis.

“Over the last 28 day period, the average apprehensions per day totaled over 5,900, so almost 6,000 people per day were apprehended on the Southwest border. That’s a large caravan a day. It’s overwhelming our system and is leading to untold inhumanity and depredations by the human traffickers.
…
“I would argue we’re not going to be able to fix Central America until we reduce or stop our insatiable demand for drugs; that’s a long-term project. So I think we need to refocus on reducing the flow of children and families incentivized to put themselves in the hands of the next most evil human people on the planet, which are the human traffickers.”
