MADISON, Wis. – There is a nationwide workforce shortage impacting industries from manufacturing to medicine, and UW Health is no exception to this challenge, which is why the health system is hosting a career event focused on hiring for environmental and food service positions.
These often-unsung heroes ensure staff and patients have healthy food options day and night. They have kept staff, visitors and patients safe before and during the pandemic; disinfecting both the common areas and places like operating rooms that require highly technical cleaning techniques.
Prospective employees can expect a minimum wage of $15 per hour as well as benefits like paid time off, health insurance, free bus passes and more, and could receive up to $1,000 as a sign-on bonus, according to Marvel Browne, career pathways recruitment coordinator, UW Health.
“We’re excited to share these career advancement opportunities with the community,” she said. “We can conduct in-person, day-of interviews with applicants who apply in advance online or those who apply onsite at the event.”
For Berenice Sanchez, an environmental services technician at UW Health for the last 15 years, the role is about so much more than cleaning.
“We are taking care of the patients’ safety,” she said.
Sanchez also sees ways she can be a part of a patient’s care, especially when patients have had fewer visitors during the pandemic.
“In our position, we can chat with patients and try to make their days a little brighter,” she said. “If we are working in their rooms, we get to listen to them or chat with them and maybe make them feel a little better.”
UW Health currently has 50 openings for environmental services positions and 35 openings for culinary services positions.
